When the WordPress Setting Looks Right but the Page Still Looks Wrong
Field Note #159
🔬 Confirmed🟡 Intermediate⏱ 30 Minutes✓ Observation from Experience
The symptom A WordPress block’s editor setting appeared to describe the desired layout, but the published page did not visually match that setting.
Investigation The editor control is only one layer of the final rendering process. The published result can also be affected by: – Parent block styles. – Child element styles. – Theme CSS. – Generated block CSS. – Responsive rules. – Width constraints. – Browser rendering.
The troubleshooting approach Do not stop at the WordPress sidebar setting. Inspect the actual rendered element in the browser and determine: 1. Which element is visibly wrong. 2. Which CSS property controls the visible behavior. 3. Which selector supplies that property. 4. Whether a parent or child is affecting the result. 5. Whether the value changes at the mobile breakpoint.
Troubleshooting lesson The editor tells you what a block is configured to do. Developer Tools tell you what the browser is actually doing. When those disagree, inspect the rendered DOM and computed styles before changing settings repeatedly.
