When Search Results Stay Centered After the Block Is Left-Aligned
Field Note #150
🔬 Investigated🟡 Intermediate⏱ 30 Minutes✓ Observation from Experience
The symptom The Search Results section was being adjusted to sit toward the left side of the page. The surrounding block could be changed, but the individual search-result content still appeared centered. The important detail was that the alignment change was affecting the container, while the content inside the search results could still have its own layout or inherited alignment. Initial assumption The first instinct was that the Search Results block’s alignment setting should control everything inside it. That turned out to be too broad an assumption. Investigation The search results are nested content. A parent block can be positioned correctly while a child element retains its own alignment or inherits a rule from another wrapper. That means repeatedly changing the parent block’s alignment may not change the visible text alignment of each result. What to check When this happens: Inspect the outer Search Results block. Inspect one individual search-result item. Compare the alignment and width behavior of the parent and child. Look for inherited text-align, flex/grid alignment, width constraints, or theme styles. Check whether the results are inside another Group, Columns, Query Loop, or template structure. Current finding The session established that the visible alignment problem could not be diagnosed reliably by changing only the parent block’s alignment control. The exact underlying rule responsible for the remaining centering was not conclusively established in the session. Troubleshooting lesson If a WordPress block appears correctly positioned but its contents are still centered, inspect the block hierarchy. Parent alignment and child alignment are not necessarily the same thing. Do not treat this entry as proof of a specific CSS cause. The reliable observation is that the alignment problem persisted beyond the parent block’s setting.
