The seller had registered it in 1993 for $100. He was 10 years old. He chose “AI” because the letters matched his initials.
Why do these numbers exist?
Domains are finite by definition. There’s one yourbusiness.com. When it’s gone — it’s gone, or it’s on the aftermarket at a price you didn’t plan for.
You don’t need millions to think this way. You need to treat your domain like the asset it is.
Three things that apply to every business:
Register the day you name the thing. $15/year holds your claim. Waiting until you need it can cost hundreds or thousands on the aftermarket.
Default to .com. Alternatives exist, but most people type .com without thinking. If your .com points somewhere else, you’re sending traffic there anyway.
Make it intentional, not accidental. Hyphens, substituted numbers, and deliberate misspellings signal the name you wanted was taken. A name chosen with purpose reads differently than one that looks like a workaround.
Your domain is digital land. Secure it before someone else does.
